As a result of collaboration between Public Health, Humboldt Waste Management Authority, the Humboldt Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention, Humboldt Independent Practice Association, Cloney’s pharmacies and community members, Humboldt County residents now have more options of where to dispose of their unused or expired medications.
KIEM News Channel 3 attended the ribbon cutting for one of two new medication disposal bins Monday morning at Cloney’s Pharmacy on Harrison Avenue in Eureka.
Cloney’s Pharmacy has also installed a bin at its McKinleyville location.
AT the March 15 Board of Supervisors meeting, Humboldt ASAP representatives Alison Newman and Christy Fausone accepted the Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month proclamation from Supervisor Virginia Bass. Newman and Fausone were joined by members of the Opioid Safety Coalition for a presentation to the board on the current scope of prescription drug abuse in Humboldt County and efforts to address the problem including promoting safe storage and proper disposal of medications, promoting safe prescribing practices, increasing access to medication-assisted treatment, and expanding access to naloxone. ASAP was joined by community partners including Humboldt Open Door Clinic, the Independent Practice Association, Humboldt Waste Management Authority, Redwood Memorial Hospital and Cloney’s Pharmacy.
